Wilma Zomer

ZOMER, Mrs. Wilma Kalamazoo Wilma passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2006. She was born April 26, 1911 in Kalamazoo, MI to William and Minnie Huffus DeLeeuw. She lived in the Kalamazoo area most of her life, living her last 13 years as a resident of Friendship Village. In 1972, she retired from the Kalamazoo State Hospital KRPH. She was a long time member of Bethany Reformed Church, where for many years she was active in the women?s organizations. Throughout her life, she was active in various sports, including the early women?s city softball and basketball leagues. To the end of her life she was an avid follower of many college and professional sports teams. She enjoyed reading, camping, traveling and handiwork. She was a member of ?the knitters? at Friendship Village, knitting hundreds of hats given to local hospitals for newborn babies. On March 4, 1933, she married William Zomer in South Bend, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two infant daughters, a son William Zomer, Jr. and by five brothers, Richard, Neil, Harold, Wilbur and Raymond DeLeeuw. Wilma is survived by a son Donald Carol Ann Zomer; daughter-in-law Carol Jean Zomer Ronald DeRuiter; five grandchildren, David Joy Zomer, Ann Brian Balow, Kara Stacey Young, Brenda Chad Borden and Donald Zomer; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Esther Lowe; many nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. A private burial service was held on November 15, 2006. There will be a special time honoring Wilma on Sunday, December 10, 2006 at 10:00 o?clock at the Bethany Reformed Church, 1833 S. Burdick St. A reception will be held immediately following the service. The family requests no flowers. If you wish to honor Wilma?s memory you may contribute to the Friendship Village Health Center Resident Activity Fund, 1400 N. Drake Rd. or the Bethany Reformed Church Memorial Fund.
