Wen Chu (Chen) Kerekes

July 18, 1945 — April 8, 2022

Kalamazoo

Wen Kerekes passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022, at the age of 76. She was born in Tai Pei, Taiwan on July 18, 1945, to the late Zhang pei Chen (Young Tsai-ce Chen). When she was younger and living in Taiwan, Wen worked at the King's Club. In the states, she worked for a few summers at Heifetz Pickle Factory in Eaton Rapids, MI. For Wen, there were many new things in the states that she had never tried. One of those things was sweet corn, and the first day she ever tried it, she ate 12 ears of corn in one sitting. She took English classes and worked on gaining her citizenship and on October 7, 1985 in Detroit, MI she was granted citizenship.

Wen met her ex-husband, Timothy Kerekes, in 1970 while he was stationed in Taiwan while in the Air Force. They dated during his tour there and then she came to the states in 1972 where they were married in October of that year. Once married they moved to Eaton Rapids and then Holt, and eventually in 1989 to Kalamazoo where she has remained a resident. She was very good at sewing and making clothes, which was a skill she passed along to her own daughter. Wen also enjoyed gardening, cooking, knitting, playing cards and bingo.

Wen moved to a senior community in 2010 where she had her circle of friends who she enjoyed doing various craft projects with. She enjoyed the monthly birthday parties and holiday events that were held there as well. She was always a friendly host and good cook, always trying to make sure people were fed and happy.

Wen is survived by her ex-husband, Timothy; daughter, Kimberly Chen (James) Barber; grandson, Calvin Barber; two sisters, Wen-Ching Chen (Shu-Fan Chiao) and family, and Wen-Hui Chen and family; and several other nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; sister, Bi-Show Chen; brother, Zhongshan-Nan Chen; and her daughter, Andrea Chen Kerekes.
