Thomas Allen Loveland

July 22, 1934 — November 4, 2019

LOVELAND, Thomas A.
of Climax, MI

Passed away at home on November 4, 2019 with his family by his side. Tom was born on a hot Sunday morning, July 22, 1934. His siblings, Reg, Audrey, Ed, and Geneva had gone to the Scotts United Methodist Church with the family car, a Model A Ford. Things were happening fast at home so Dad Loveland walked to Scotts to get the car so he could go to Galesburg to get the doctor. Tom was born before the doctor got there...all was well. Tom grew up on the Loveland family farm in the Climax-Scotts area. Many members of the community at the time came to work picking black raspberries. He attended the Climax-Scotts Schools and in his senior year he signed up for the draft. He entered the US Army in September 1953 and served his country in the European Theater until August of 1955. On arrival home, he was self-employed with his father, Wallace S. Loveland, making greenhouse flats in the sawmill on 36th Street in Scotts for customers in the Comstock and Portage areas. The Galesburg Snack Bar was the local hangout for the young at heart at that time. There was a bowling alley, pool hall, movie theater, in addition to the snack bar. Carl Roelof was the owner of the snack bar and Tom said he wanted to meet a nice girl. One night in January 1956, he met that special one, Eva Marie. They were married in June of that year - 63 years ago. To this union were born Timothy Allen Loveland and Ricky Lee Loveland. Those preceding Thomas in his passing were his parents, Wallace S. and Grace Gillespie Loveland. His siblings, Reg (wife Mary), Audrey (husband George), Edwin (wife Nina), and Geneva (husband Bernie). Surviving are his wife, Eva Marie, sons Timothy (wife Pam) and Ricky (wife Nancy). Three grandchildren, Amanda Bean (husband Richard), Andrew Loveland (wife Randi) and Marina Loveland, and three great grandchildren, Dixie, Chadrick, and Ryker. The fourth great grandchild is expected in December. Also surviving are many loved nieces and nephews. After plastic flats replaced wooden, Tom knew it was time to find other employment. He went to work for General Motors - Fisher Body at the Kalamazoo Plant. He retired after 25 years of service. Tom enjoyed hunting and fishing from his pontoon boat on Blue, Long, and Portage Lakes in the Climax area. His favorite was catching perch. Tom loved Our God, his country, and his family. He supported Eva Marie's work in the church helping others or teaching Sunday School. Tom was a member of Scotts United Methodist Church, and the Climax American Legion Post. A memorial service will be held 11 o'clock Saturday, November 16th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 205 E. Maple St, Climax, MI 49034. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Private burial will take place in Boughton Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Scotts United Methodist Church or to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
