Susan B. Horne

Susan Belle Horne, 90, of Kalamazoo, Michigan passed away of natural causes with her family by her side on January 28, 2023.

Susan was born on August 13, 1932, to Rolland Adams Lyons and Ruth Lillian Becker Lyons in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

After graduating from Delton Kellogg High School, Susan attended the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Western Michigan University, graduating with a BA in Business Education.

In 1952, Susan met Walter Harold Breyer, Jr. in East Lansing, Michigan and was married in Angola, Indiana. Susan and Walter had three children, Rebecca S. Breyer Schmidt, Robin J. Breyer Gerin and Walter H. Breyer III. In 1981, Susan married Irving A. Horne of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Susan’s professional career involved serving 16 years with the Michigan Department of Social Services where she served regionally and at the state level.

Following her retirement in 1981, Susan was a member of Rotary International for 10 years and served as the volunteer manager for the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop for 18 years.

Susan was predeceased by her parents, Rolland A. and Ruth L. Lyons, her spouses, Walter H. Breyer, Jr. and Irving A. Horne, her companion, James V. Rosenbaum, her brother, Rolland B. Lyons, her sister, Joey M. Hagan, and her son, Walter H. Breyer III.

Susan is survived by her daughters, Rebecca S. Schmidt (Russell J.) and Robin J. Gerin (David C.), and grandchildren Karen (Michael) Groves, Emily (Rev. Andrew) Menz, David (Lauren) Gerin II and Andrew Breyer, and great grandchildren, Laurel and Ranger Groves, Henry, Lillian and Madelyn Menz, and Skylar Gerin.

A private memorial service will be held at Langeland Family Funeral Homes in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation is given to St. Andrew Community Church, 3631 Covington Rd., Kalamazoo, MI 49001 or to a personal charity.
