Russell Earl Mohney

March 18, 1933 — February 11, 2020

MOHNEY, Dr. Russell E.

Of Portage, Michigan

Dr. Russell E. Mohney Jr., age 86, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2020, at his residence in Portage, Michigan. Russell was born on March 18, 1933, in Decatur, Michigan, the son of Russell E. and Olive Mohney Sr.

On June 22, 1957, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cleora I. Jeffries. Together they raised 4 children, numerous "adopted" children, and helped raise 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A 1960 graduate of The University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Mohney served his internship at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, and he went on to complete his residency in Neurology at Wayne State University in Detroit. From there he moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where he served as a Pediatric Neurology Fellow at the Mayo Clinic. In 1966, Dr. Mohney returned to Kalamazoo to open his neurological practice at Borgess Hospital. During his distinguished career, Dr. Mohney served the community in general neurology and was instrumental in bringing both CT and MRI scanning to Southwest Michigan.

He was highly respected in both the local and national medical communities. Known as a passionate and skilled physician, he was loved by his patients, their families, his staff and partners. He was never too busy to listen or help.

Russell never forgot his roots, and in 1973 he moved his family to a Blueberry Farm in Portage, Michigan. He loved farming and enjoyed raising a variety of farm animals, especially his beloved chickens.

Even with his busy medical practice, Russell always attended the sporting events of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The love he shared with his family was like no other.

Russell was a very generous and loving person, helping and supporting countless people and charitable causes his entire life. He truly exemplified the meaning of "giving back to others" and instilled this in his entire family. He had an infectious laugh and smile and touched all those he came in contact with. He will be truly missed, but he will live on in the hearts of all those who knew him.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years Cleora I. Mohney; four children: Jeffrey Mohney, Tanya (Dan) Urich, Craig (Jean) Mohney, and Brandt (Lisa) Mohney; 6 siblings; 11 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He was pre-deceased by his parents: Russell and Olive Mohney Sr.; brother Dean Mohney; and grandson Justin Russell Mohney.
