Robert John Philipp

Robert J. Philipp, age 84 of Vicksburg, died at home on October 8, 2021. He was born on September 22, 1937 in Kalamazoo, the son of Robert S. and Margaret J. (Griffin) Philipp. Bob was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and he served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War era. Bob attended Ferris State University before transferring to Michigan State University, to play baseball, where he graduated. He worked as a custodian of records for 5/3rd Bank, retiring several years after closing the Westnedge Ave. location. He played on many bank sponsored slow pitch softball teams, as well as managing the team for many years. Bob was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan and could recount stats about the team and games to anyone. He was a former Council President of Vicksburg and enjoyed politics. His military service was a proud time in his life and he was a supporter of veterans. On September 9, 1967, he married Sharon Kuiper. They shared many wonderful years together. Family was always important to Bob and supporting his grandchildren filled a lot of his time in later years. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharon; his daughter, Becky Jones; and a granddaughter Allison Sharon Jones. His family includes his son-in-law, Greg Jones; his grandchildren: Jessie (Elijah) Brook, Brady (Summer) Jones, Casey Jones, Katie Jones, and Brandon Jones; his great-grandson Greyson Gregory Brook; his brother-in-law, Harvey (Susan) Kuiper; and several sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock on Friday, November 5th at St. Andrews Community Church, 3631 Covington Rd. followed by a luncheon at the church. Dress will be casual and the family encourages MSU Spartan or Detroit Tigers apparel. Memorials may be directed to American Legion Post 36.
