Robert Dean McCully

Robert "Bob" McCully, age 93, peacefully passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at The Laurels of Galesburg after an extended illness. He was born on September 13, 1928, in Kalamazoo, the son of Joseph Ambrose McCully of Kalamazoo, and Dorothy (Courtney) McCully of Kalamazoo. Robert was the youngest of four siblings. Robert grew up in Kalamazoo and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. During the post-WWII housing boom, Robert worked construction jobs and built many homes in the Kalamazoo region. After establishing a successful construction career, Robert married Mildred Jane Farthing of Mattawan, Michigan. Robert and Mildred met at the house Robert was building for Mildred's mother. The couple raised two sons, Dean and Brian. Robert and Mildred worked for several years at The Upjohn Company. Upon retirement, they traveled frequently to visit their eldest son Dean, in Arizona, then in California, and their youngest son Brian in Grand Rapids. They enjoyed frequent trips to Binder Park Zoo and the Air Zoo with their grandson, Nathanael. Bob and Mildred were also deeply involved with Covenant United Reformed Church as charter members. Surviving are Robert's sons, Dean (Lisa Bickford) and Brian (Kendra Jones), his grandson Nathanael McCully; sister-in-law: Roberta Gotham and brother-in-law Ralph Gotham, and several generations of nieces and nephews. Preceding Robert in death were his parents, wife Mildred, sisters Lois and Marion, brother Joseph, and daughter-in-law, Tami (Bruinsma) McCully. Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery, in Mattawan.
