Robert Louis Hubbard

November 30, 1935 — May 1, 2019

Robert L. Hubbard, Sr., age 83, died peacefully at home on May 1, 2019. Robert (Bob) was born November 1935 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Ralph and Selma (Draper) Hubbard. He was the eldest child and had seven younger sisters.

He was most proud of his relationship with Jesus Christ, his wife, and his children. He knew how to find the best in everyone, and always reminded family and friends of their many qualities.

He served his country from 1955 to 1959, a ranking petty officer 2nd class as a naval radar operator on the Destroyer USS Borie DD704. He started a library and became the librarian, and he was the chess champion aboard his ship. After an honorable discharge, he became a highly accomplished IBM electronics technician, winning the national IBM service award. Hard work and entrepreneurial goals paved the course for R. L. Hubbard Enterprises where he purchased Roto-Rooter Franchises in Southwest MI, as well as other businesses he operated through the years until his retirement.

He was a 12th generation descendent of the Mayflower, a private licensed pilot, and sponsored men's softball leagues, little league, bowling, and more. He served his community in many ways through the years as well.

In his later years, he enjoyed spending time outside in his yard and helping his neighbors. He loved the swans, birds and wildlife surrounding him on the St. Joseph River, though he was not a fan of all the additional work caused by the falling seeds of his walnut trees.

Surviving are his wife Janice Hubbard, children: Bob Jr. (Patti) Hubbard, Pam (Tom) Gregg, Dale (Connie) Hubbard, and Nancy (James) Marks; step children Dennis, Jeff, Sherrie, Michelle; and several grand and great grandchildren.
