Michael Aaron Geschwendt

February 27, 1986 — December 7, 2021

Kalamazoo

35 years old is way too young to die, especially for someone as vibrant, loving, silly, and full spirited as our brother. Michael, who we affectionately refer to as Mikey, which he hated, is one of the most loved human beings we know. He is a guy who lit up every room he walked into and his laugh was contagious. He never met a stranger he didn't immediately befriend. He was witty, HORRIBLY sarcastic, and hilarious. Michael truly embodied the guy who everyone enjoyed having around. Michael was so so special to so many and wasn't just referred to as Uncle Mikey by Maddie, Jaelen and Jordan, his niece and nephews, but also by so many of his dear friend's kids as well. He was the one person you just genuinely wanted to be around because his presence was so uplifting and warm. Many called Michael a giant "teddy-bear". He knew every funny movie quote and line from 'The Office' and could sit and quote Seinfeld, Tommy Boy, and Christmas Vacation verbatim. Michael was a master of throwing out one-liners. His nephews Jaelen and Jordan, his 'cruise roomies', always knew they could count on Uncle Mikey to throw some zingers their way. Maddie, his niece, got the softer, hugging side, while the boys got the tickling Uncle.

Michael was adopted at three months old from Oaxaca, Mexico as a Zapotec Indian only to become, of all things, a Michigander. His older sisters, myself (Angela) and Jen, adored him like a baby doll in real life until he was old enough to know better. He grew up on Gull Lake and graduated from Gull Lake High School before attending KVCC. Much to my dismay as I am a Spartan, he was a die-hard U of M fan. Our whole family only agreed on sport's teams on one day, when either of us played Ohio. He worked for Glassmaster shortly after caring dearly for our father, Vernon, who passed from ALS in 2015. Michael was the nurse of all nurses and I always thought if that ever became my fate, I would want my brother to take care of me like he did my dad. He was devoted, kind, patient, and absolutely by my dad's side until the end. After Glassmaster, he started working at Helmus Plumbing with his dear friend Steve. I dare say he was the happiest he had ever been working there. They treated him like family and that meant so much to Mikey. The past year I saw my brother turn into someone who was genuinely thriving and I believe we owe much of that to his friends and 'family' at Helmus.

I know there is no easy way to end a 35-year old's obituary. As a sister, as a caretaker, as someone who lost their mom and dad and nephew like we did, I thought we would have so many more Christmas, NYE, and birthdays together and I am deeply saddened to know that we will not. The gifts sitting under our tree this year will go unopened and that does not seem fair. This has broken our hearts. What I do know from the absolute outpouring of love and kindness from all of his dear dear friends, is that Mikey was THE uncle, THE best friend, THE guy to turn to and that fact absolutely melts my heart. His friends are amazing. His family loves him. His nieces and nephews, whether legit or by love, are always remembered, as is his memory. Michael Aaron Geschwendt lives on in the legacy of true friendship and genuineness in the amazing memories he left behind. Thank you, Michael, for taking us ALL on this short road, albeit an amazing journey, with you. We love you so much, you just have no idea. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Section 1776 or pay it forward, do a kind deed, live a life of purpose, on purpose. All good things. Love you brother- so so sooooooooooooooo much! Michael is left behind by his sister Angela Geschwendt (Combs and Matthew Combs), Jennifer Geschwendt Bodley, Madison McCue, Jaelen Kerperien and Jordan Kerperien. Preceded in death by Vernon Geschwendt, Jane Geschwendt, and Colten Ledger. His Celebration of Life will be at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Burial & Cremation Services, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo, 49009, on Saturday, June 4th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM- ALL are welcome and we hope you will come pay tribute to one amazing guy whose smile could win anyone over.
