Leroy Lyle Bird

Leroy L. Bird, age 81, passed away on May 6, 2022 . Leroy was born the son of Lyle and Ilene Bird, in Battle Creek, MI, on August 26, 1940. Leroy served in the U.S. Navy from January 1959-December 1962, as a crew member on the Anti-submarine aircraft P2V based in Hawaii and Japan. Leroy was united in marriage to Leah R. Bird in1963. He worked at NCR (National Cash Register) for 9 years and went on to become president and share-holder of CRS (Cash Register Sales & Service). He enjoyed hunting, fishing, building dune buggies, and custom vehicle modifications, where he built a self contained custom RV. Leroy built an experimental helicopter and won Grand Champion at the Osh Kosh Air Show in 1997. He was very active in raising all 4 of his grand-children. Leroy was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lyle and Ilene Bird, his sister, Cindy Bird and his brother, Warren Bird. Leroy is survived by his wife, Leah; brother, Fred; two children: Wendy (Bird) Kershner and Stacy (Bird) Bird-Steele: four grandchildren: Austin Kershner, Kalee Kershner, Colby Steele and Katelyn Steele; and one great- granddaughter, Ezra Kershner. Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private graveside service with military honors will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Friends may gather with his family on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, from 4:30-6:30 PM at the Augusta VFW Post #7956 13540 W. M-96, Augusta, MI 49012.
