Laura Louise (Vander Straaten) Johnson

Laura L. Johnson, 64, went home to be with her Lord and Savior in early February 2021. She was born in Kalamazoo, MI on November 5, 1956, the daughter of Dick and Gladys(Martz) Vander Straaten. Laura was a retired Tumor Register for the West Michigan Cancer Center where she worked for 17 yrs. She was an active member of Word of Life Church of God and a devout Christian. Laura was a very caring and compassionate person who loved birds, especially her Dove Sydney. She also loved jewelry, and was very artistic and even at times, made some jewelry. Laura had a very giving and forgiving nature about her, and would do anything to help someone. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister Sandy. Along with her loving husband Gary of 35 years, she is survived by her son, Nicholas; her cousins who were more like brothers and sisters, Debbie (Jeff) Ryder, Bob (Linda) Vander Straaten, Dick Vander Straaten, Laura (Larry) Hopcroft, Ann (Jon) Hayes, Paul (Cynthia) Vander Straaten; and her best friend Louise (Pat) Langworthy. A private burial for family will take place at Mount Ever Rest Memorial Park South. In lieu of a funeral, there will be a memorial service for Laura and Gary on Saturday, June 26, 2021. All family and friends are invited to attend and information will be posted on Facebook. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in honor of Laura to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, www.birdsanctuary.kbs.msu.edu
