Obituary

John F. Walraven died March 23, 2021, at his residence from natural causes. He was born December 5, 1939, in Portsmouth Twp, Bay County MI to Charles and Phydalis (King) Walraven. John graduated from St. John High School and furthered his education at Northeastern School of Commerce. He took a job at Midland Country Club. John married Catherine (Reezie) DeVet in 1966. They moved to Portage MI in 1972 when he took a job at Kalamazoo Country Club. John later went to work for Eliason Corporation in Portage until his retirement. John loved sports. He was an avid softball, pool, and golf player and had dozens of trophies to show for it. He enjoyed watching all sports on television, always supporting the local teams. John was involved in his children's sports by being a coach for the team or coaching from the sidelines. In later life he took great joy attending his grandchildren's extracurricular activities. John enjoyed working in his barn, taking care of his yard, and playing with his dog. He would lend a helping hand to anyone every chance he could. John was a loving father, grandfather, and a friend to all. He is survived by his two children, Paul (Christina) Walraven, Matthew (Christie) Walraven, five grandchildren, Taylor, Natalie, Ian, Catherine, and Owen, Siblings Ken (Mary Jo) Walraven, Nancy (Denny) Vert, Linda (Kittredge) Wright, and Ilene (Tom) Weber. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lu Ann Lloyd. A memorial for John will be held later this year. Date TBD. Please consider a donation in John's name to the SPCA.
