ELZINGA, Mrs. Ida
Of Portage Went home to be with her Lord, Friday morning, February 20, 2009. Ida was born February 12, 1916, in Portage, the daughter of the late Jacob and Johanna Klop Scheffers. She was a lifelong Portage resident and wife of a celery and bedding plant farmer. Ida was also a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church of Portage where she had been active in many groups throughout the years. She will be well remembered for her cooking, not only for family and friends, but for many years working in the kitchen for Portage Public Schools. On September 30, 1933, she was united in marriage to Jacob "Jake" Elzinga who preceded her in death on February 11, 1992. Also preceding her in death were all of her siblings, Jacob Scheffers, Nellie Zuidema, Albert Scheffers, Arthur Scheffers, Marie Mulder and Jennie Johnson; two grandchildren, Suzie Jo and Steve; and a great-grandson, Jacob. Surviving are two sons, Jacob "Jake" Doris Elzinga, Jr. of Portage and Allen Becky Elzinga of Harbor Beach, MI; grandchildren, Dale Elzinga, Ann Elzinga, Jim Judy Elzinga, Mark Tami Elzinga, Jeffrey Elzinga, Dan Elzinga; great-grandchildren, Toney, John and Amanda; many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at the First Reformed Church of Portage 7905 S. Westnedge Ave. with Rev. Mike Drew and Rev. Ed Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Portage Central Cemetery. Memorials in Ida's memory may be directed to First Reformed Church of Portage. www.langelands.com
