Dennis P. Moore

March 3, 1951 — September 22, 2021

Kalamazoo

Dennis Moore, age 70, passed away peacefully on September 22nd at his home in Kalamazoo, Mich.

He was born in Grand Rapids, Mich. and was the youngest child of Edward Joseph Moore and Margaret (Frederick) Moore.

Dennis grew up in Grand Rapids and Detroit, and attended high school at Georgetown Prep in Washington D.C. He graduated from Alma College with an Art degree, and a few years later married the love of his life Susan Hingston. Dennis' job with Detroit Ball Bearing took him across the country from Colorado, to Tampa, FL, to Charlotte, NC, and then back to Michigan where his family settled in Grosse Pointe.

Once their daughters, Tricia and Erica, graduated high school, Dennis and Susan enjoyed traveling down to their house in Florida, playing golf and enjoying the beaches and sunshine. Later, Dennis and Susan moved to Freeland, Mich., and also enjoyed lake life on Higgins Lake. When the grandchildren were born, they traveled a lot to Madison, Wis. and Kalamazoo to visit the newest members of the family, before finally moving to Kalamazoo to be closer to his daughter, Erica, and her family.

Dennis was a kind and caring man, with an excellent sense of humor. He lived a rich life, full of incredible stories -- like the night he hung out with a young Bill Murray, the time he golfed with Alan Shepard, or the weekend he spent boat shopping with Bob Seger. He had an immense knowledge of trivia and watched "Jeopardy!" almost daily. He was also passionate about coins and art. He loved sailing and had numerous sailboats over the years, his favorite being "Azure Mer", which he and his wife traveled to Paris to see being built. He loved Clive Cussler novels, and he was a pretty darn good golfer. He adored his daughters, Tricia and Erica. Whether he was coaching their youth softball teams, calmly teaching them how to drive, or bringing shots of Baileys to the wedding dance floor, Dennis was always there for his daughters. He also loved his grandchildren. When traveling became difficult in later years, he continued to cherish time watching videos of recitals or using technology to follow their baseball and hockey games.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 44 years, Susan; his daughters, Patricia Hands (Phil) and Erica Penner (Jim); his five grandchildren Owen, Matthew, Eva, Claire and Jack. He is further survived by his brother, Michael Moore (Carolyn) and sisters Anne "Sissy" Luyat and Mary "Bo" Squire (Roger), numerous nieces and nephews, his puppies, Dash and Boo, and his cat, Emma.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved dog, Betsy.

Dennis will be remembered for his kind heart, joyful smile, and generous spirit, and will be greatly missed.

An open house to celebrate Dennis' life will be held at his home in Kalamazoo Saturday, Oct 23 from 1-4pm.
