Carl Robert Tarnow, Jr.

Carl R. Tarnow, Jr., age 92 of Kalamazoo, died at Bronson Hospital on May 23, 2022. He was born on December 12, 1929, the son of Carl, Sr. and Maxine (Rushmore) Tarnow. A graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, Carl was a devoted local businessman who always remembered his cherished customers. He grew up working at his parent's business, Tarnow Dairy, started in 1907 and finally closed in 1977 as the last family-owned dairy in the City of Kalamazoo. He then ran the Tarnow Restaurant and most recently was known for Catering by Tarnow at Pine West Event Center. On May 26, 1951, he was united in marriage to his loving wife Lillyan Johnson, who preceded him in death in 2015. Lillyan spent many years side by side with Carl working in their business. Carl enjoyed the family cottage at Eagle Lake. He always looked forward to coffee with his friends and former co-workers. Carl was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Surviving are his children, Gregory (Carol) Tarnow and Kevin Tarnow; grandchildren: Josh, Alyce, Rachel, Emily, Nicholas, Laura, Zachary, and Mady; great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Graham; his sister, Louise (Ed) Smith; his brother-in-law, Richard Billette; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillyan and his daughter Brenda Basak. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 28, 2022, at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, with Pastor Mike VandenBerg officiating. Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the service at 10:00 AM at the Westside Chapel. A private family interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
