Alice Eileen Scamehorn

Passed away Monday morning, February 8, 2021 at her home. Eileen was born August 23, 1936 in LaPlata, MO the daughter of Thomas Joseph and Mildred (Waggoner) Billings. She graduated from Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, IL in 1954. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Kalamazoo College in 1958.
Eileen was an active member of Westwood United Methodist Church for many years where she served in many capacities. She was also active in the Kalamazoo community as a Girl Scout leader and in retirement was involved with ISAAC Kalamazoo (Interfaith Strategy for Advocacy & Action in the Community), the Kalamazoo Literacy Council and the Shepherd's Center. Eileen worked for a number of years as an elementary school teacher in Michigan and California. Later, she worked as office manager for the Michigan Audubon Society, from which she retired in 2002. Eileen was a birdwatcher and enjoyed being out in nature. She loved storytelling, had a much appreciated wit, and always kept her friends and family entertained with her tales. She was also an avid reader and was particularly fond of historical non-fiction.
On April 18, 1960, Eileen was united in marriage to her loving husband Russell who preceded her in death on December 12, 1966. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Billings. Eileen is survived by her children, Carol Scamehorn (Swartz Creek) and Donald Scamehorn (Kentwood), and her niece Jennifer (Billings) Porter (Oglesby, IL). Cremation has taken place at the Langeland Family Cremation Center.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on February 25th at Westwood United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo. COVID-19 protocols will be observed and seating may be limited.
