William “Bill” I. Baldwin, age 85 of Portage, Michigan, died on June 18, 2024. He was born on May 10, 1939, in Springfield, Missouri, the son of Louis Owen and Frances (Hargus) Baldwin. Bill grew up in the Des Moines, Iowa, area and studied at Iowa State University as a mechanical engineer. On June 29, 1974, he married Gena Bergdahl. The couple moved to Portage in 1991. During his career he worked for Armor/Swift/Eckrich and then retired from Bayer.
Bill and Gena were active members of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church where Bill assisted with the sound system for services. Bill was a builder, fixer, and designer and he held several patents. There were always projects to work on and discuss when you would see him. He built and flew radio controlled airplanes with a local group of enthusiasts. He and Gena loved being on the water which, in typical fashion for him, led to building a boat.
His family includes his wife, Gena Baldwin; his children: Heather (Tom) Raffa and David (Heather) Baldwin; his step-children: Jeffrey (Sandra) Lewin, Deborah (Tim Adams) Lewin, and Gregory (Joy Schloemer) Lewin; 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Sheila Christopherson.
Friends may visit with the family from 10:00-11:00 AM, Friday, June 28th, 2024, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1747 W. Milham Ave, Portage, MI 49024, where his service will be held at 11:00 AM with Rev. Rachel Laughlin officiating. A graveside service will be held at South Portage Cemetery at 2:00 PM.
