Tony I. Vargas

January 9, 1955 — September 6, 2022

Kalamazoo

Tony Isedor Vargas, age 67, beloved son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, passed away suddenly at Bronson Methodist Hospital and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.

Born on January 9, 1955, in Muncie, Indiana, to Jean Johnson and John Vargas, Tony spent his youth with his beloved grandmother (Grandma G) and sister-cousin Kathy Johnson-Motley. The two shaped his personality and sparked his love for life. Later moving to Michigan, Tony attended high school at Kalamazoo Central High School. Following the advice of his mother, he joined the United States Army. Soon after making his way to boot camp, he received word of his first child.

After completing his time in the Army, Tony returned home where he was blessed with a position at the U.S. Post Office and three additional children.

In the fall of 1981, he met the love of his life, Sue Vargas. After building a strong and loving relationship Tony and Sue married on July 14, 1984. The two were married for 38 years and shared two children.

Tony had many things in life that brought him joy. He enjoyed fishing, sewing, and gardening; he had quite the green thumb. Another great joy was his special and enduring love for his friends, but his greatest love was that of family.

He is preceded in death by his beloved grandmother Geraldine Johnson, his father John Vargas, his sister Harriette Burton, and his grandson Chase Taylor. Cherishing his memory are his wife Sue Vargas; his mother Jean Johnson; his sisters Gila (Kenneth) Burton-Curl and Faith (James) Cooks; his brothers Karl Burton, John Pitts and James Pitts; his children Avichai Tzvi, Tonia (Shawn) Vargas-Sowers, Tonika Vargas-Gordon, Tony Vargas II, Michael Vargas and Angela (Charlee) Vargas; his grandchildren Tobias (Jennifer) Engberts, Joshua Engberts, Diamond (Nevin) Lee, Wayne Martin Jr., Tony Vargas Jr., Malachi Martin, Makayla Vargas, John Martin, Kyron Gordon, Myron Gordon Jr., Madison Vargas, and Miguel Vargas; many great grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
