Robert James Martin

Robert James Martin, 76, of Portage passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019. He was born February 2, 1943 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to the late Robert Vaughn and Katherine Jean (Hol) Martin. He was a graduate of Ferris State University with an Associate Degree in Applied Science for Automotive Service and earned his Master Auto and Heavy-Duty Truck Certification in the State of Michigan. Robert served six years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was part of Seabee Battalion #74. He worked for many years at J&G Garage which he co-owned and operated with his father. Robert then became an inventory controller with the former Upjohn Company, retiring in October of 2000. An avid car enthusiast, Robert enjoyed restoring old cars in his spare time. He spent many weekends at car shows enjoying his labor of love and talking with others who shared his same passion. Robert was united in marriage to Donna M. Ouding on April 23, 1965, who preceded him in death in 2013. He was also preceded in death by his son, Robert Joseph Martin in 2016. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Lynn (Jerry) Walker of Galesburg; and two grandchildren, Justin Walker and Hailey Martin. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2-5:00 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave., where a funeral service will be held Monday, May 20, 2019 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Jim Dyke officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Ft.
