Robert J. Johnson

July 14, 1925 — December 29, 2022

Robert J. Johnson passed away Thursday afternoon, December 29, 2022. Robert was born July 14, 1925 in Kalamazoo the son of Raymond and Ethelyn (French) Johnson. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.

His work life involved the meat industry. Bob and his brother Richard owned a wholesale meat business. When Richard retired Bob finished up his work career as the Meijer meat manager at the South Westnedge store for over 20 years. Bob enjoyed gardening and music.

Bob discovered the world of genealogy and did extensive research on his family lineage which his son Garry shared and enjoyed working with him side-by-side. Because of his interest in genealogy Bob volunteered at the County of Kalamazoo clerk’s office helping others in their family research. Swimming at the YMCA for many years was one of his favorite forms of relaxation. He enjoyed making friends and always had a kind word for people that he met. When Bob entered retirement, he set out traveling around the world.

On October 1, 1943 Robert was united in marriage to Mary (Curran) who preceded him in death in 1986. He remained faithful to Mary and never remarried. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Richard Johnson; infant sister, Dorothy Louise; and sister, Marjorie Welch. He is survived by his sons, Garry (Darla) Johnson, Eric Johnson; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
