Kalamazoo

Phyllis died peacefully at Friendship Village Woodside (Kalamazoo) on February 17, 2024.  She was just one week shy of her 105th birthday.  She was a long-time resident of Friendship Village (since 2006), and we wish to thank the fantastic, amazing staff there for their loving care.  They all helped to make her life fulfilling and enjoyable for so many years, especially during her last years at Woodside.   We also wish to thank the wonderful staff of Centrica Hospice for their very special care during her final weeks.

Phyllis was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on February 23, 1919, the daughter of the late Henry and Ada (Molhoek) Newcastle.  She was a long-time member of the Second Reformed Church in Kalamazoo.

She was a 1941 graduate of Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She went on to teach elementary school in the Grand Rapids (MI) School System, the Kalamazoo (MI) School System, and the Stevensville (MI) School System.

On December 26, 1942, Phyllis married Jacob (Jack) Jalving, who preceded her in death on May 7, 2006.

After retirement, Phyllis and Jack spent many years wintering in Clearwater, Florida.

Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Susan (Gary) Johnston of Kalamazoo and Mary J. Wallace of Kalamazoo; one grandson, Randolph J. Wallace of Los Angeles, CA; one sister-in-law, Frieda Jalving of Redlands, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred (Blair Hill); several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and her son-in-law, Randolph L. Wallace.

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place.  A private service will be held at a later time for the family.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Second Reformed Church Memorial Fund or the Friendship Village Employees’ Scholarship Fund.
