Phyllis Delora Heacock, 97, passed away at Ascension Borgess Hospital on December 13, 2023. She was born in Lansing, Michigan on April 6, 1926, to Wayne R. Hoyt and Blanche (Burley) Barris.
Growing up, Phyllis’s parents moved the family to their grandparents’ farm near Marcellus and Schoolcraft. She completed high school and went to work at the Sutherland and Allied Paper Mills for seven years. There she met her future husband, Roger Heacock. Roger had returned from World War II a handsome Sergeant, and he was smitten with Phyllis. Phyllis and Roger were united in marriage on June 22, 1946. They were blessed with over 50 years together, until Roger’s passing in 1997.
After working in the paper mills, Phyllis went on to work for Eckrich as a meat packer and scaler for 24 years. She was always a hard worker, and with her husband, provided for her family while raising 6 children. Phyllis was a people person, and loved the friends she made from work, church, and clubs. She and Roger were members of the Loyal Order of the Moose and often spent time at the local VFW. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and camping.
Phyllis took interest in her family tree and keeping ancestral records. She wanted to be able to tell her children and grandchildren all about their family and the generations before them. Her family was the center of her world, and she cherished her memories with them—especially her 50th wedding anniversary with Roger, and her 85th birthday party. Phyllis is survived by her children Mary (John) Bergstrom, Harriet Hancock, Dr. Nancy (Allan Priore) Heacock, Ginny (Scott) Wilson, and Lloyd (Sharon Hamilton) Heacock; brother Jim (Karon) Barris; seven grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Roger Heacock, her
parents, her son Roger Heacock, Jr., and her brothers Dorian Hoyt, Gregory Barris, and Ted Barris.
Private family services will be held for Phyllis at Langeland Family Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Mt. Ever Rest Memorial Park South. Please visit Phyllis’s memorial webpage to share condolences and memories with her family at http://www.Langelands.com
