Philip Teitelbaum, age 79 of Portage, Michigan, passed away on October 12, 2022 at Rose Arbor Hospice with his wife, Cheri by his side. He was born on December 19, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Max “Scotty” and Stella (Feigin) Teitelbaum. Phil graduated from Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, NY. He received his BA from Brooklyn College and his MA from Western Michigan University, majoring in Counseling and Psychology. Phil proudly served his country in the United States Army. Phil was united in marriage to Cheryl "Cheri" Ann Miller on October 19,1996 in Maui, Hawaii.
Phil never met a stranger and was able to befriend all that crossed his path. He was always available to talk and provide encouragement to others. This strong interest and genuine care for others lead him to a rewarding career in the human services field. He was a Psychologist and Administrator at the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital until his retirement after nearly 30 years. Later, he became the Program Manager for Lakeside Treatment and Learning Center, and Clinical Evaluator for Community Connections. He also was a Contractional Therapist at the Elizabeth Upjohn Community Healing Center. He served on various committees including the Southwest Michigan Psychological Association, American Psychological Association, Kalamazoo County Personnel and Guidance Association, Kalamazoo Committee for Children’s Television, Kiwanis Club of Portage, and the Kalamazoo County Recipient Rights Advisory Committee. His teaching career included the University of Missouri, Glen Oaks Community College, and the University of Southern California. Over his vast career, Phil helped people of all ages overcome problems with mental illness, addiction, abuse, and loss. He was a strong humanitarian who genuinely cared for the welfare of all.
Phil’s hobbies included being an avid photographer and his creativity was apparent in the videos that he made for special occasions. He was a collector of all things electronic, always having the newest and greatest gadgets. His passion for movies can be seen in his extensive library of titles. Phil was also a lifetime devoted NY Mets fan.
Survivors include his loving wife, Cheri (Miller) Teitelbaum; his children, Dan (Nanako) Teitelbaum of Warner, NH, and Ken (Krista) Teitelbaum of Beijing, China; 4 grandchildren, Brandon, Keagan, Sarah, and Perry; sister, Iris (Steve Sanford) Teitelbaum; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Connie (Miller) and Steve Yorks; niece and nephew, Nicole Yorks of Vero Beach, FL and Christopher Yorks of Moline, MI; and his beloved dog and constant companion, Shayna Maidela; as well as a host of wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Orvan and Vivian Miller.
Memorial Services will be held Friday, November 18, 2022 at 12:00pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services 3926 S. 9th St. Kalamazoo, MI 49009. The family will greet friends from 11:00am until the time of service at 12:00pm at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to Rose Arbor Hospice or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, in memory of Phil.
