Paul D. Hansen

February 20, 1942 — January 11, 2023

Kalamazoo

Paul Douglas Hansen died Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at his home. He was born February 20, 1942, in Kansas City, MO, son of the late Paul and Katherine (Gariety) Hansen.

Shortly after his birth Paul’s parents moved the family to Kansas City, KS where Paul spent his childhood with parents Paul and Katherine, and siblings Robert, Donald, and Paula Hansen. He joined the Army when he as eighteen, just afterwards he was first stationed in New York. Shortly after induction he was then stationed in Germany where he lived for a short time and always stated he would love to visit again one day. Once his tour was up and he was honorably discharged, he moved to Kalamazoo, MI with his best friend Mike Davis and met his spouse of ten years, Susan Hansen (divorced). Together they had three children who he is survived by eldest, Stephanie (Christopher (deceased)) Falcon, Kimberly (Dean) Ford, and Lee Anne Hansen who still live in the Kalamazoo area. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Justin (Karisa) Hansen, Courtney (Kenny) Jones, and Hali Falcon, along with two great-grandchildren Aroura and Kora, and by marriage, Maddox. After his divorce from Susan, he met at work and married Roberta (Gilbert) Hansen, they were together for nearly twenty years.

Paul enjoyed many things when he was younger, some of which he carried close to him throughout his life. He loved bowling, shooting pool, and golf which he held a love for throughout his adult life. He joined many leagues and played many rounds in tournaments or just for fun. He loved to go for long drives and absolutely loved the beach, even though he was never dressed for it. You would always know when Paul was around due to that unmistakable clicking from the plates on his cowboy boots. He would drag the kids and his wives to flea markets on the weekends to look at and buy strange useless junk although sometimes would find a treasure or two. Every summer he looked forward to taking the family to the Kalamazoo air show as well. Paul was known well in Parchment for his peculiar pets he kept before owning reptiles was cool; Mariah, Tabu, Apollo, Alice, and little shit (Mr. Snake) which were boa constrictors and a ball python.  He loved to show them off to anyone who wanted to see, and many Parchment North Elementary students forty years passed may remember the man who brought the snakes into science class. He worked for 38 years at the paper mill in Parchment where he made many friends and was beloved by all. Paul was extremely active in and a supporter of AA as he was a recovering alcoholic who made a difference in many lives. He was a friend to all he knew, could strike up a conversation with a stranger and before long made a new friend. Paul left a mark on everyone he encountered and will be forever missed.
