Nicholas James Schaberg, age 78, of Kalamazoo passed away July 30, 2024. Nick was born January 11, 1946, in Kalamazoo, to the late John Copley and Laurene (McCrimmon) Schaberg. He was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and later attended Western Michigan University for his undergraduate degree and Wayne State University for his law degree.
As a third-generation attorney in Kalamazoo, he began his career at the law practice of his father, John Schaberg, and worked with him until his father retired. Soon after, Nick added a partner, Greg, and his law firm became Schaberg & Bosma. After many years in this private practice, he was appointed to be the magistrate for Kalamazoo County, where he was known for his fair treatment and no-nonsense approach. He retired from the magistrate position in September 2023.
He was a former member of the Kalamazoo County Substance Abuse Board and served five years as a volunteer attorney with the Douglas Community Association. Additionally, he was a member of the Kalamazoo County Trial Lawyers Association, the Kalamazoo County Bar Association, and the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan.
Nick enjoyed the challenge of a good crossword puzzle and played in a golf league for many years. He enjoyed time spent on the water with family and friends. He also loved spending time up north at his cabin in Baldwin.
Nick was married twice, has four sons, and six grandchildren.
He is survived by his former wife, Cheryl Jean, and their sons: Mark and Gavin (Jenny); his former wife, Mary Schaberg, and their sons: Isaac and Kyle (Anna); six grandchildren; his brothers, Steve (Linda) and Peter (Norma); his sister, Martha (Andris) Purmalis; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday, August 9, 2024, at 1:00pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial and Cremation Services, 3926 S 9th St, Kalamazoo, MI 49009, where family will greet friends from 11:30am until the time of the service.
