SLINGERLEND, Margaret J. Portage Mrs. Slingerlend passed away late Tuesday afternoon, October 10, 2006 at Alterra Clare Bridge in Portage. She was born September 26, 1914 in Hopkins, the daughter of the late James and Bessie Beeman Campbell. In 1937, Margaret earned a B.S. from Western State Teachers College. She worked for 25 years as a school teacher in the Detroit area. For the next years, she taught in several other school districts in Michigan, until her retirement in 1978. Margaret continued her education and in 1966, she earned an M.S. from Michigan State University. In her retirement, Margaret taught at a few community colleges throughout Michigan. She was very involved in many organizations, including the AAUW American Association of University Woman and the NCOA National Council on Aging, of which she was a board member. Being a school teacher, Margaret?s great passion was spending the summers traveling the world. Surviving are 2 sons, Glenn Jan Slingerlend of Battle Creek and Mac Maria Slingerlend of Denver, CO; 6 grandchildren, Scott Judy Kinney of Texas, Jon Sonia Slingerlend of Arizona, James Cheryl Slingerlend of Battle Creek, Sara James Hadaway of Battle Creek, Terra Todd Emerson of Colorado, and Brad Anna Slingerlend of Colorado; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Barbara Hanson of Allegan and Charlotte Al Saxe of Florida; 1 brother, John Campbell of Allegan; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Slingerlend will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Hopkins. Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Monday at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer?s Association or a charity of one?s choice.
