Kalamazoo

Margaret Ann Borton was born August 4, 1938 at Bronson Hospital. Daughter of George and Mildred Borton. She passed away at her family home on November 28, 2022. She is survived by her cousins Kathy and Becky Hague. Margaret was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She graduated from State High School, class of 1956 and Western Michigan University B.S. 1960 and M.A. 1964. Her 38 year career with Kalamazoo Public Schools began at Milwood Jr. High where she taught Homemaking and English. Then she taught the same subjects at South Jr. High. In 1998 she retired from Hillside Middle School where she taught English and Beginning French. Her seventh graders were her favorite students to teach!

She enjoyed travel especially by airplane with a window seat in first class and always from Kalamazoo. Her favorite destinations were Milwaukee, WI, Quebec, France, and the Rockies (Colorado and Canadian). She also enjoyed trips with Tauck, Carolyn Mack and the Portage Senior Center. The Pacific Northwest was another favorite spot. She was there on her 80th birthday! In 2022 she enjoyed two trips on American Cruise Line-Charleston and Savannah and then the East Coast…she claimed to never have been “on a boat before.”

Margaret enjoyed memberships in KARSP (Kalamazoo Association Retired School Personnel), Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (50 year member and Chapter Woman of Distinction). She was Corresponding Secretary for many years for her Epsilon Chapter, American Sewing Guild and NEA Retired.

She was a lifelong learner…in her eighties she learned to use a tablet. She had pen pals of many years that were special to her…Jean from England, Inge from Germany and France from France.

Margaret was an only child and her many friends became her family. She was a loyal and devoted friend…she loved to go out and eat with her friends to celebrate their birthdays…often at Red Lobster or Olive Garden. She loved take out from Grand Traverse Pie Company…especially quiche. She previously attended First Presbyterian Church with her parents. After their passing she regularly attended Milwood United Methodist Church.
