Judith Evonne Zigterman

January 16, 1931 — January 24, 2024

Kalamazoo

Judith Evonne Zigterman was called to her eternal home on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. Judy was born in Prinsburg, Minnesota on January 16, 1931. She was the second of three daughters, born to Peter B. and Helen (Nieuwenhuis) Bouma, who were Christian School teachers. They moved the family from Prinsburg, to Hull, Iowa, to Bellflower, California, to Oskaloosa, Iowa.

While living in Oskaloosa, Judy publicly professed her Christian faith. She attended and graduated from Pella Christian High School. She then left home to attend Calvin College. Before graduating she was hired to teach in Highland Indiana Christian School. It was here that she met Kenneth Zigterman.

Ken and Judy were married on June 9, 1955 in the 1st Christian Reformed Church of Highland. They were blessed with three sons: Mark, Steven (deceased), and Brian. Issues with health persuaded Ken and Judy to move to Denver, Colorado in 1962.

While in Denver, Judy finished her college education. An economic recession and family ties prompted a move to Sheldon, Iowa. Judy taught in Sheldon Christian School from 1975 until retirement in 1992.

Ken and Judy made their final move to Portage, Michigan in 1993.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Ken; son, Steven; grandson, Steven Mark; and sister, Jacqueline De Jong.

She will be remembered by her sons, Mark (JoAnn) Zigterman and Brian (Lori) Zigterman; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Ashley) Zigterman, Jamie (Kevin Schmaeman) Zigterman; Kari (Matthew Kuhn) Zigterman; and Kaitlynn Zigterman; great-grandchildren, Rylee, Maxwell, Blake, and Charlee; sister, Betty Jonker of Inver Grove Heights, St. Paul, Minnesota; brothers-in-law Glenn De Jong of Hospers, Iowa and Ron (Chris) Zigterman of St. John, Indiana; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Monday, January 29 at 11:00am at Covenant United Reformed Church, 3724 Lovers Ln, Kalamazoo, MI 49001, where family will greet friends one hour prior from 10-11:00am. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Ken, in Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
