Gilbert L. Peguero, age 98 of Portage, died on March 23, 2024. He was born in Loveland, Colorado, on February 4, 1926, the son of Octaviano and Marcela Peguero. He had lived in Portage since 1966. On September 6, 1947, he married Carmen Cantu, and she preceded him in death in 2003. Gil was an avid sportsman and loved baseball, bowling, and golf. He excelled at golf and had six hole-in-ones in his career. Gil served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Phoenix from April 1942-January 1946. He retired as a tool and die maker from General Motors, after 39 years of service. 

He is survived by his daughters: Gloria Bartram and Linda Ritchie, both of Portage; his grandchildren: Greg (DeAnn) Bartram, Holli (Matt) Blazey, Lance (Nikki) Ritchie, and Travis Ritchie; his 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

Friends may visit with his family on Tuesday, April 2nd, from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Burial & Cremation Services, 411 East Centre Avenue, Portage, MI, 49002, where a prayer service and time of sharing will be held at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 3rd, at 11:00 AM at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, 4408 S. Westnedge Avenue, Kalamazoo, with Rev. Russell Homic presiding. Interment will follow at Portage Central Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions in memory of Gil may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
