George T. Hixson

December 5, 1951 — April 30, 2023

Kalamazoo

Passed away Sunday, April 30, 2023. George was born December 5, 1951 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of James and Mildred (Roberson) Hixson. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Kenny and Danny. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army and worked many years for GM. As a loyal and committed Democrat, his generosity was felt by many. While most of his life he was known as George, his best years were spent as “Papa”. He loved spending time at the beach, taking a walk, watching all sports, and throwing a football with the grandkids. If it was a sunny day, Papa would be outside working on his tan. He loved to go fishing with his Uncle Jack and as a foody he would enjoy cooking and eating mostly seafood. Above all else, Papa lived for his kids and grandkids. Whether it was nerf wars or basketball, he enjoyed every moment and so did they. Evenings and weekends were spent being the loudest voice on the sidelines at their sports games. Papa was always fully involved from playdough, painting, coloring, to teaching the kids to ride bikes. You could often hear Papa describing something he loved as “killer” whether it was a golf swing or a great meal.

On November 1, 2002 he was united in marriage to his loving wife Cinda (Rustenholtz), who survives. Also surviving are children, Carmen Johnson (Bryan Widman), Abigail (Brett) Mumy, Jennifer (Michael) Vallier, Jessica (Brad) Griffioen; grandchildren, Mikey, Makayla, Madison, Caitlin, Kenny, Colton, Donna, Kai, Jathan, Baylynn, McKenzie, Maxen, Taj, Aubree, Thomas, David, Ripley, and one grandson on the way; sisters, Teresa (Tom) Newcomb, Diane (Mike) McCaul; parents-in-law, Pat (Bob) Rustenholtz; brother-in-law, Bob (Carol) Rustenholtz; a special uncle, Jack (Diane) Roberson; and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and no services are being planned per his wishes. Private interment will be at a later date.
