Passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023, surrounded by family. George was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Melvin and Lucille (Griner) Black on August 4, 1938. Early in life, George joined the Navy where he served for a number of years. During this time, George married his best friend, Eleanor, who he enjoyed the rest of his life with. Following his time in the Navy, George served in Law enforcement, serving the Kalamazoo County Sheriffs Department and the Vicksburg Police Department. He was a man who loved his family deeply and cared with everything he had. Surviving George is his wife, Eleanor; children, Thomas R. Black, James A. Black, Jennifer Black; granddaughters, Trisha (Thomas) Brownd, Allyse Stafinski; great grandson, Conrad C. Brownd, and brother, Donald Black. Preceding him in passing are his parents. We want to thank all the hospice nurses and aides for their help in making him comfortable during his passing. In accordance with his wishes, cremation will take place and a memorial mass will be held in his honor at a later date. Interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a time yet to be determined. Notification will be issued in the Kalamazoo Gazette a week prior to the service. In lieu of flowers please direct any memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Shriners Children’s Hospital.
