Eugene “Gene” Stephen Bombich died Thursday, December 8, 2022, in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born November 9, 1940, in Pittsburgh, PA a son of the late Eugene E. and Ruth (Sharp) Bombich.
Gene graduated from St. Augustine High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1959. He joined the United States Army and became a Sergeant. He was a member of the 101st Airborne and served in the Vietnam and Korean wars. He served with Kalamazoo Township Police Department. In continuation of his law enforcement career, he served as medical examiner for Kalamazoo County and founded Bombich Investigative Services. For years, the sportsman that he was, served as coach for Rocket Football in Kalamazoo and Baseball at Kalamazoo County Community College. He competed in a recreational golf league for many years, and his love of the game continued even long after his retirement. Gene and Clare were Football season ticket holders at Michigan State University for 25 years. GO GREEN! He was a parishioner at St Mary’s Church for 25 years.
The loss of Gene will be felt by all those who’ve had the honor of knowing him and ever calling him “friend”.
A wife lost her life partner, a son and daughter lost their dad, a granddaughter lost a Grampy, the world lost a patriot, soldier, LEO and a Coach! Rest well Grampy! Play Ball!
On April 4, 1964, Gene married the former Clare King, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Christopher (Michele) Bombich, and Michelle (George) Clarke; granddaughter, Ashley Marie (Jonathan) Hodgens; great-grandson, John Clarke Hodgens; brothers, Gregory (Mary Sue) Bombich, and Jeffery Bombich; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 Monday morning, December 19, 2022, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 3926 S. 9th St, Kalamazoo MI 49009. Gene’s family will begin greeting guests at the funeral home at 10:00 and briefly following the service. Committal services with military honors will be held at 1:00 in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should be in the cemetery assembly area by 12:45. The family asks in lieu of flowers donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project in memorandum of Eugene S. Bombich.
