Elizabeth "Betty" Jane (Weiss) Cramer

August 27, 1920 — February 13, 2023

Kalamazoo

Elizabeth Jane Cramer, nee Weiss, went to God on February 13, 2023 at the age of 102 years. She was born August 27, 1920 in La Porte, Indiana, to Frederick W. and Frances (Lewandowski) Weiss. On February 4,1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, La Porte, she married Norbert P. Cramer, who died in 2017. Betty was the last survivor of her generation of the Michael Lewandowski family. Betty's grandfather, Michael, a Civil War veteran, and his wife, Martha (Kosmatka), raised eleven children in the area of Otis and Michigan City, Indiana.

Following graduation from La Porte High School, Betty worked for many years at Woolworth's as a soda jerk, head saleslady, and in many other positions. After marriage Betty and Norbert raised their daughters while living in Michigan City, IN, Cincinnati, OH, and Benton Harbor and St. Joseph MI. She worked as a mother/homemaker and was active in the parish and school communities at St. John Catholic Church in Benton Harbor.

Betty loved music - from classical to pop, from Van Clyburn to Elvis. She enjoyed embroidery. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and developed a unique scoring system which she used while watching every game on WGN-TV. Her father taught her how to drive a car when she was a teen, but she did not own a driver's license as an adult; so she walked everywhere around Benton Harbor. She did enjoy traveling across the United States by car (Norbert drove) with extended family members and also made several trips to Luxembourg and Germany to visit relatives. One of her fondest memories was viewing the northern lights during an overnight stop in Iceland on the edge of the Arctic Circle.

Survivors are a sister-in-law Florence (Bernacchi) Cramer, La Porte, IN; daughters Martha Cramer O'Donnell (James), Park Ridge, IL, Catherine Cramer Tundevold (Lee), Portage, MI; grandchildren: Bryan O'Donnell (Claire Donnee), Conor O'Donnell (Angela Garneata), Ole Tundevold (Kimberli Kerkstra), Eric Tundevold (Shana McGovern) and Leah Tundevold; and five great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Aileen (Weiss) Schirr, brother James Weiss, brothers-in-law Gerald Cramer and Carl Schirr, and sisters-in-law Margaret (Cramer) Diffendorfer and Beverly (Olson) Weiss.

In accordance with Betty’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 19 at 10:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 C St, La Porte, IN 46350. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, La Porte, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Betty's memory may be directed to The Cure Starts Now or to Heritage Community of Kalamazoo Foundation.
