Edwin C Frederickson’s Obituary

Edwin C. Frederickson passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of March 12, 2023, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, MI. Ed was born on February 18, 1938, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania to Theodore Frederickson and Margaret “Peg” Corbett. He grew up with a loving, community-minded family, who taught him the value of compassion, diligence, and responsibility.

In 1956, he enrolled at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie-Mellon University on an ROTC scholarship, discovering aptitudes for computer programming and the theatrical arts. He earned his bachelor’s degree and after serving in the United States Army, he moved to New York City to find his calling.

Ed met the love of his life, Bonnie Ann Buckley, in 1962, while working at the New York Daily News. They married in 1967 with two sons, Eric and Roy arriving in 1970 and 1974, respectively.

In 1975, he moved his family to southern New Jersey, where he served as General Manager and then Publisher of the Vineland Times Journal. Seven years later, the Evening News Association, impressed with his financial and managerial acumen, would call him to Detroit to take on the role of Vice President of Finance and Administration. He would help ENA fend off a hostile takeover in 1986 and facilitate their subsequent sale to Gannett.

In the wake of ENA’s acquisition, he was recruited by a group of investors to acquire and manage legal newspapers in San Diego, California and Columbus, Ohio. He would spend the next 36 years as President and CEO of Calcomco, Inc.

Ed believed in giving back to his community, volunteering for the League of Women Voters in Vineland, New Jersey and Grosse Pointe, Michigan, as well as serving on the Grosse Pointe library board. Nothing meant more to him, though, than the family that he loved and supported for more than half a century.

Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bonnie, his sons Eric (Jill) and Roy (Marci), his grandchildren Brett and Megan, nephews John Albright and Matthew Ruby, and nieces Barbara Renda, Carol Heaver, Sharon Adamo, and Elizabeth Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Margie Albright and Joan Beardsley.
