Edward M. Shipe passed away on February 1, 2024 with his mother and sister at his side. Edward was born on August 11, 1960, the first child and favorite son of Maynard and Grace (Schreuder) Shipe.
Edward grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Edward is survived by his mother, Grace; his sister Elaine (Dan) DeHoff; one niece and one nephew; special friends: Loy Miller and Jon Kamayatsu of California and Rich Ito of Tennessee; and two people he called his special niece and nephew: Kimberly Miller of Georgia and Christopher Miller of California. He was preceded in death by his father in 2010.
Following secondary school, he attended Western Michigan University, where he received a BBA in Public Administration and Accounting, graduating with honors. From there, he went to graduate school at Kent State University, receiving his MBA in Finance. Edward and his fiancée, Sue, relocated to southern California. After Kent State, Edward also took post graduate classes at the University of Southern California.
Upon receiving his master’s degree, he took a position with Unocal Corporation in Los Angeles. He worked in the corporate division for 2 years, spending one year on a geothermal power plant construction site in Salton Sea. Following Unocal, he joined the finance department at McDonnell Douglas in Huntington Beach, California as a senior specialist. While at McDonnell Douglas, he worked in Arizona on the MD500 and Apache helicopters. He also did work on Delta rockets, commercial aircraft (MD50 and MD12) and military aircraft (C-17). He also worked in Phoenix with Ernst and Young CPA office, where he received the experience to become a Certified Public Accountant in California. After McDonnell Douglas, he joined Roxbury Capital Management in Santa Monica, California as Vice President of Finance. While at Roxbury, he became a partner, rising to Chief Financial Officer and Management Director.
Edward enjoyed golf, biking along the Pacific Coast, tennis, attending USC football games and numerous Rose Bowl games, as well as an Orange Bowl game. He also enjoyed traveling very much, visiting 49 states (he missed Alaska), Japan, and many European countries. Edward’s favorites were Switzerland, Germany, and France.
Edward enjoyed concerts, having been a season ticket holder to the Hollywood Bowl. He was also a season ticket holder for the Los Angeles Lakers and Kings, attending many NBA finals. He also attended the 1984, 1987, and 2013 Detroit Tigers playoff games, and the 1988 World Series game, Dodgers versus the A’s.
Friends and family may gather Monday, February 5, 2024 from 2-8:00pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial and Cremation Services, 411 E Centre Ave, Portage, Michigan 49002. A graveside service will take place Tuesday, February 6 at 10:00am at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park South, 3941 S Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49008. Edward will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
