Edith Louise (Barkalow) Perry

December 7, 1933 — April 4, 2023

Portage

Edith Louise Perry passed away peacefully at Rose Arbor on April 4, 2023. She was the daughter of Herschel Barkalow and Lucille Stephenson, born in Schoolcraft, MI on December 7, 1933.

Edith has always been a caregiver to children, elderly and her family. She was also a Sunday school teacher at First Assembly of God for over 35 years. God and family were of the highest importance to her, and she never turned her back on anyone in need.

On April 19, 1957 She married the love of her life, Ronald Perry. Together they adopted their children and were blessed to have a completed family.

Edith was always concerned for others safety, wellbeing, and general happiness. She would do anything for anyone in need and she is remembered for her incredible selflessness.

If you were to find the word “resilience” in the dictionary, you would find a picture of Edith. She was strong and would always bounce back after any kind of bump in the road. She passed this trait on to her children and her beloved granddaughter.

Edith enjoyed crafting of any kind from crochet, needlepoint and scrapbooking. If someone else had a craft she wasn’t into yet, she would get all the supplies and try it for herself. She was always an avid reader of the bible and Christian novels. She loved playing games on her computer, cellphone and keeping in contact with family and friends on social media.

Edith is survived by her children Denise (Larry) and Stephen (Helen); granddaughter Kayleigh (Kelby); sisters Phyllis (David) and Lorraine; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ron; and sister Vivian.

A graveside service will be held for Edith at Portage Central Cemetery 7719 S Westnedge Ave. Portage, MI 49002 on Monday, April 10, 2023, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kalamazoo Family & Children Services 1608 Lake St. Kalamazoo, MI 49001, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105. Any flowers will be donated to Rose Arbor Hospice after the graveside service.

The family would like to give special thanks to all the caregivers who helped take care of Edith over the years, especially Vicki, Shatia and Braylen.
