Dorothy June Ochala

August 16, 1931 — April 29, 2024

Dotti Ochala, aged 92, of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away on April 29, 2024. She was born on August 16, 1931, in Detroit, MI. She was a graduate of Pershing High School in Detroit and held an Associate Degree from Schoolcraft College in Early Childhood Development. Dotti was known for her infectious laughter and love for lively gatherings. She was a dedicated advocate for justice and took pride in her involvement with Citizens for Peace in Livonia. Her early interests included Romanian music and dance, which help to foster her love of dancing in her adult life. She also enjoyed sewing and produced many special dresses and outfits for her family. She was an avid sports fan and participant. She enjoyed skiing, golf, tennis, basketball, walking, and exercising.

Dotti’s warm and welcoming nature made her a cherished friend, a faithful companion, and a devoted family member.

Dotti worked for many years outside of the home. As her children grew older she returned to the workforce in the bookkeeping field and in a variety of retail positions. She used her early childhood degree experience as an assistant with before and after school elementary programs.

Dotti is survived by her children Ron Ochala (Ilene Kelton), Debra Hulsey (Rick Hulsey), Patti Ochala, and Grandchildren Allegra Hulsey, Hannah Hulsey, Dylan Ochala Gorka (Kelsie Michelson), her sister Eleanor Gruich and her sister-in-law Anita Burak.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Casmer Ochala, her parents, Anna and George Burak, her brothers, George Burak (Evelyn Burak), Tom Burak, and her brother-in-law Tom Gruich.

Dotti's legacy of love, laughter, and togetherness will be deeply cherished by all who knew her. She was a wonderful Grandmother and a very special ‘Auntie’! Her love of a Sander’s Cream Puff Hot Fudge Sundae was legendary!

The family extends their gratitude to the caregivers at Bronson Commons and Centrica Hospice Care for their unwavering support and compassion.

An interment for the immediate family will take place at Holy Sepulchre at a later date and a Mass will be delivered in her honor at noon on Sunday August 18th at St. Gerald’s Catholic Church in Farmington, MI. A Celebration of Life event is being planned for the week of her birthday in August.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Citizens for Peace Education Fund 35898 Leon St. Livonia, MI 48150
