Donald J. Flatt

Donald James Flatt, age 77 of Portage, MI, went to be with the Lord on February 6, 2023. Don was born on May 10, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, the only son of Everett and Hazel (Wilkerson) Flatt who preceded him in death. Don was a 1963 graduate of East Detroit High School and received his Master’s Degree in Education from Western Michigan University. For 35 years, he was a teacher at Battle Creek Central High School. Don proudly spent many years at Battle Creek Central involved with the football program. His teaching career began at Van Buren Special Education and continued onto Battle Creek Central, St. Phillips, and Homebound.

Don married Beverly Teichman on December 23, 1970, in Detroit. Their family grew to include their four daughters. Don and Beverly are members of St. Catherine of Siena Parish. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus, MARSP, and the WMU Alumni Organization. Don was also a member of the Portage Parks and Recreation Committee and served many years as an election official.

Don is survived by his wife Beverly Flatt; his daughters: Julie (Steve) Biron, Jeanette (Joseph) Kelly, Jennifer (Daniel) Kloosterman, and Janice (Kevin Hunt) Flatt; his grandchildren: Nate Biron, Ben Biron, Donovan (Christina Redmond) Kelly, Caitlin (Darian Beckham) Kelly, Jack Kelly, Emma Kloosterman, and Ethan Kloosterman.

A memorial mass will be held on Monday, February 13, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Catherine of Siena, 1150 West Centre Avenue, Portage, MI  49024.  Visitation immediately prior to the mass, with the opportunity to visit with his family, will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Don may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council, the Catholic Charities, or Alternatives of Kalamazoo.
