Bruce Loyal Mason

November 30, 1948 — September 20, 2023

Comstock

On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, Bruce (Mace) Mason of Comstock, MI, made his last inappropriate comment at the age of 74. Bruce had a knack for making unforgettable impressions, and if you ever had the pleasure of crossing paths with him, you'd know it - sometimes for better, sometimes for worse, but always unforgettable.

Born to Loyal (Bud) Mason and Imodene Mason on November 30, 1948, Bruce grew up riding horses and dirt bikes. He never met a dog he didn’t like, and there was never a dog that didn’t like him. Bruce's high school journey was as unique as he was. He attended University High in Kalamazoo but decided to part ways after his junior year due to what we shall call "philosophical differences." A lifelong resident of Comstock, he graduated from CHS where he racked up stories, scars, and lifelong friendships.

For years, Bruce steered the wheel of American Freight trucks with loyalty, hard work, and pride. A craftsman by trade and a leader by nature, he was a proud ironworker who later in his career became a foreman for the Austin Company during the Pharmacia era. With a reputation for being a tough individual, he valued integrity, honesty, and good old-fashioned hard work. He could fix just about anything and spent a lot of time helping friends, neighbors, and sometimes strangers, in exchange for nothing more than a few laughs and a couple of beers. He had a gruff exterior but wouldn't hesitate to give you the shirt off his back. His friends would say he was one of a kind.

Bruce was a master at having a good time, and he made sure everyone else had one too. He hosted annual Goat Roasts, enjoyed vacations with family and friends, participated in Harley Davidson motorcycle rallies across the country, and even installed a slide in his living room for his grandkids at Christmas. Life with Bruce was an adventure, and we were all lucky to be part of the ride.

Seven days shy of celebrating 55 years of marriage to Patricia (Patty) Mason, she was his rock and the North Star of his moral compass. He was extremely proud of their two children, Rob (Tina) Mason and Danielle (Trent) Mason Anderson, who tell many heartwarming stories of their childhood. He loved golfing with his granddaughter, Zoe; and took great pleasure in teaching his grandsons, Miles, Parker, and Cole, the art of peeing in the backyard. Bruce is also survived by nephews Mason and Steve Everett, Kyle Walker, sister Gayla Mason, and a few others who are fortunate to be part of the Mason tribe.

In the great beyond, Bruce has reunited with his parents, sister Shirley and her husband Pat, and numerous friends and family who passed on before him. Underneath his tough exterior, Bruce was loving, giving, and caring. He led a remarkable life and found a peaceful end. When it's your time to go, rest assured Mace will be there waiting to welcome you with a cold beer in his hand.

A celebration of Bruce’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue . Friends and family are encouraged to share a memory and condolence message on Bruce’s online memorial page at https://www.Langelands.com
