Bernard ''Bud'' Mein

MEIN, Bernard ?Bud? of Portage Passed away Thursday, November 16, 2006. Bud was born April 26, 1920 in Portage, the son of Geert and Wilhelmina Kannegieter Mein. A lifelong Portage resident, Bud was very active in community, civic associations and the development of the City of Portage. He began working in the coal and feed business and was founder of Mein Oil Company, Mein Heating Company. For over 30 years he was a builder and developer, developing Shannondale Acres, Mahogany Acres and Coachlite Estates. Bud was a member of the charter committee for the City of Portage and had served as the First Mayor of the City of Portage. He had also served as a board member of the Portage Community Outreach Center, the American National Bank, the Battle Creek Hunt Club and the Michigan Horse Association. Bud was a member and past president of the Portage Optimist Club. For many years he and the Southwestern Michigan Saddle Club sponsored horse shows at the family farm on South Westnedge to benefit the March of Dimes. On April 6, 1945, Bud was united in marriage to the former Annabelle Dykstra who preceded him in death on July 19, 1979. He was also preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Wilhelmina Ely, Dena VanSparentak, Jeanette Miles and Gertrude Curtis and by two brothers, John and Jacob Mein. Surviving are three children, Shirley Umphrey of Waterville, ME, Gary Nanci Mein of Kalamazoo and Bernie Cindy Mein of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren, Marc Umphrey, Ryan Stephanie Umphrey, Jason Samantha Mein, Suzanne Erik Kratochwill, Brent Nancy Mein and Katie Kyle Overheul; three great-grandchildren, Lauren Annabelle Mein, Allyson Rose Mein and Kelly Elizabeth Overheul; a sister, Winifred Terpstra; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 pm Monday at the Langeland Family Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. with Rev. James Dyke officiating. A private family committal service will be held in Portage Central Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-5 pm at the Portage Chapel. Memorials in Bud?s memory may be directed to the Cheff Center for Handicapped Children, 8450 N. 43rd Street, Augusta, MI 49012; the Portage Community Outreach Center, 7130 S. Westnedge Ave, Portage, MI 49002; or a charity of your choice.
