Barbara E. Slates

Passed away Monday afternoon, October 19, 2020 at her home. Barbara was born September 18, 1946 in Fayetteville, NC the daughter of the late Harry and Irene Carlisle. She grew up in Cassopolis, MI and was crowned Miss Cassopolis in 1964. Following the family's move to Portage in 1987, she graduated from Western Michigan University. Barbara was the main greeter with her husband and an active member of Renovation Church since 1987. For many years Barbara taught etiquette to many high school and WMU students. Prior to her retirement she was a hostess for several years at Webster's restaurant. She later worked for several years with Langeland Family Funeral Homes as a receptionist and hostess. Barbara had an infectious smile and had the ability to make people feel loved. On June 5, 1965 she was united in marriage to her loving husband of 55 years, Robert Slates, who survives. Also surviving are her sons, R. Trent (Cindy) Slates, David (Jessica) Slates, Stephen (Joy) Slates; 10 dearly loved grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, Brandon, Justin, Peyton, Nadia, Eliana, Mikaya, Carson, Karina, Malachi, Colton, and Mikayla; her brother, Rex "Ed" (Cheryl) Carlisle; and several nephews. Friends may meet the family from 5-7pm Thursday, October 22 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial and Cremation Services, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. Private family services will be held Friday and private family interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Due to Covid-19, numbers will be limited in the building, mask are required, and social distancing is required. Memorials may be directed to Renovation Church or Kindred Hospice.
