VANDERSLIK, NORENE E.
Kalamazoo

Norene, age 103, passed away early Wednesday morning, August 9, 2017 in Kalamazoo. She was born on January 17, 1914 in Saginaw, MI, the daughter of the late Ray and Bernice (Catherman) Thomas. On August 25, 1944, Norene was united in marriage to James A. Vanderslik, until his passing in 1975. A graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, she worked for Dr. Benjamin Nibbelink's family for about 20 years prior to meeting Jim. She was a secretary at Kalamazoo Public Schools for over 20 years and also a dedicated volunteer on the Bronson Hospital Flower Cart for another 20 years. Norene was a lifetime member of Stockbridge United Methodist Church (until their closing), then transferred her membership to Milwood United Methodist Church. Norene lived every day of her life to its fullest up until the very end, maintaining her independence at Wyndham Apartments for the past 21 years. She spent her entire life giving to others, often providing care to those needing assistance, even into her 90's. Surviving are her two sisters: Mildred Karnemaat and Mary Prouty of both of Kalamazoo; six nieces and nephews; twelve grandnieces and nephews; and five great-grandnieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were two brothers: Karl S and Arthur L. Thomas. Norene's family would like to thank Wyndham Apartments and Heritage Community for the loving care they provided over the years. A service to celebrate Norene's life will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, August 14 at Wyndham Apartments Multipurpose Room, 2300 Portage Street. Rev. Billie R. Dalton will officiate. Memorial contribution may be directed to Heritage Community of Kalamazoo or a charity of one's choice.
