Gerald passed away Thursday, December 21, 2017 at the age of 84. Jim was born September 30, 1933 in Climax, MI to the late Harland and Lula (Tyler) Piper. Jim was united in marriage to Judith "Judith" LaFond who preceded him in death in 2015. They were married for 52 years. Jim was raised in Climax-Scotts with his siblings. In 1954 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he proudly served two years in 29 Palms, CA. After the service, he started working as a machinist for National Water Lift in Kalamazoo, MI. In 1976 he was transferred with the company to Beaufort, SC where he retired in 1989 as a lead conventional machinist. Jim then started working for Beaufort Molded Products, making molds for plastic injection molding. He officially retired in 2003 and began to enjoy retired life. Jim and Judy lived in South Carolina but would enjoy the summers in Climax, MI camping at his sister's house. Jim moved back to climax in July 2017 with his son, Jared (fiancé Nicole) and his pets. Jim is survived by his son, Jared (fiancé-Nicole) Piper; siblings, Ione Coburn, Marilyn (Pete) Oswalt; and brother-in-law, Philip Oswalt. Jim was preceded in death by siblings, Gale Piper, Harriet Soule, George Piper, Margaret Burr and Marion Carroll; in-laws, Henry Coburn, Corrine Piper, Marjorie Piper, Carroll Youngs, Lyle (Red) Soule and Lyle Burr. Per the family's wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place Tuesday, January 2nd simultaneously with his brother, George. Committal services begin at 1:00pm at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Climax Chapel, 205 East Maple St.
