MIYAGAWA, Mrs. Betty J.

Went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 24, 2018. She was born February 5, 1930 to Nile Benjamin and Ione (Sanford) Benjamin at Munson Hospital in Traverse City, Michigan. She lived in Paw Paw, Michigan for her younger years until her family eventually settled in Kalamazoo. Betty met Jim Miyagawa in Mr. Scheib's history class at Kalamazoo Central High School and both graduated from there in 1948. She was hired at Michigan Bell Telephone Company after high school as a Service Assistant and was promoted to Supervisor during her 5 years of employment there. Betty and Jim were married on June 14, 1952 and shared nearly 66 years of marriage. They had 3 sons, James, David and Thomas. She was a loving mother and very involved in all aspects of her sons' lives, including a variety of roles alongside Jim with the Boy Scouts. Betty was an avid bowler and gardener. She was an active member of the Westwood Garden Club for many years serving on various committees and as treasurer for much of that time. When the boys were a bit older, she joined in the family business as the bookkeeper at George's Appliance Company, working there with her husband and sons for 38 years. Betty enjoyed attending Saint Andrews Community Church for as long as she and Jim were able. Previously, Betty and Jim were members of Oshtemo Methodist Church and she volunteered at many of the church dinners. She enjoyed the support and visits she has received over the years from Pastor Jim Dyke. Her family is grateful for the care that she received at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Betty is survived by her loving sons, David (Marcia), and Thomas (Mary Claire), sister Mary Mosher and sister-in-law Bonny Miyagawa, nephew John Miyagawa, nieces Kay (Bill) Ennis, Robin (Ken) Howard, Terry (David) Gappa, nephews Richard (Julie) Taylor, Brian (Joelle) Mosher and cousins.
