SPENCER, Martha A.
Martha Ann Spencer passed to Heaven on March 7, 2019 at the early age of 66 after a decade long battle with dementia. Marti was born on March 15, 1952 in Ypsilanti, MI to the late Thomas and Rosemary Lawrence.
She graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1970 and then attended Central Michigan University where she met her future husband, David Spencer. Marti and Dave were married in 1972 in Ypsilanti, and moved to Bloomingdale, MI shortly thereafter. Marti began her career in healthcare at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI and later transitioned to a small family medical practice in Bloomingdale. Healthcare proved to be the perfect outlet for Marti to express her selfless nature. This gift showed most brilliantly in her ability to care for and connect with children, the elderly, and mentally disabled patients.
God blessed Marti with two sons, Andy in 1976 and Casey in 1978. The two young parents were instantly devoted to their children. With her boys, Marti especially enjoyed trips to the beach at Lake Michigan, bike rides around Ypsilanti, picking blueberries at the Fritz Blueberry farm next door to their home, events at Bloomingdale Christian Church, and family vacations. As her boys got older, she never missed their many sporting events. For nearly twenty years, Marti was a regular at football, basketball, and baseball games watching her boys compete in youth, high school, and college athletics.
Although described by many as one of the most caring, selfless people they had ever met, Marti was also a fierce fighter. She beat cancer in 1983 and battled dementia for more than ten years. She credited all glory for her strength, faith, hope and love to her Father in Heaven. She is survived by her husband, David; her son Andy and daughter-in-law Erin and her grandchildren Luke, Camille, Colette, and Blaire; her son Casey and daughter-in-law Megan and her grandchildren Zachary, Joshua, Gweneth, and Aubrey. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas; mother, Rosemary; and brother, Thomas.
