Passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 4, 2020 in the loving presence of his wife, Andrea. He is also survived by his three brothers, Jeffery, Terence, and Richard and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Ken was born on March 28, 1939 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of the late Dr. Walter and Alice Starz. He lived a full and eclectic life pursuing many interests and careers. Ken loved education and attended Swarthmore College, Manhattan School of Music majoring in piano, New York University, and Jefferson Medical College. His primary career was as a physician with training in internal medicine, pulmonary, psychiatry, and sleep medicine. He worked for Upjohn as Associate Clinical Research Director in CNS Development of sleep and psychiatric drugs. He received the W.E. Upjohn Award for special accomplishments.
Ken had a unique intellect with great expertise in science, mathematics, classical music, and religion. He will always be remembered as a most fascinating conversationalist who loved deep discussions with provocative questions in topics ranging from fractals and Mandelbrot sets to the origin of consciousness. "Uncle" Ken's memory will always be cherished and treasured by his family.
A memorial service to celebrate Ken's life will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 11, 2020 at the Langeland Family Funeral Home Burial and Cremation Services, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI, 49009. Friends may meet the family Saturday from 12:00 to 1:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. A reception will follow the memorial service in the Langeland Family Center.
