  • Hospice Caregiver Banquet

    Wednesday, November 01, 2017 to Monday, November 30, 2020

The Hospice Caregiver Awards Banquet on October 11 was an evening to celebrate the wonderful work of our 12 monthly Hospice Caregiver Award recipients. The banquet took place at the Langeland’s Westside Chapel on 9th Street. It included a catered meal and a program designed to honor these extraordinary individuals.

Each of the monthly Hospice Caregiver Award Recipients were asked questions about their role as a Hospice Worker. Following are a few of their quotes shared at the 2017 Awards Banquet. They are all very special people, which you can easily see from these responses:

What attracted you to Hospice work? “When I became a music therapist I especially was interested in hospice care because of my grandmother's journey with dementia. Before she eventually had to move to a skilled nursing facility she lived with my parents and I spent a lot more time with her at the end of her life . She was a music lover and she especially loved the musical "The Sound of Music." As I saw her decline and lose more and more abilities I was always amazed by the power of music. How, when she was barely speaking she would come back to us and sing along with "edelweiss." Or, even later, when she was minimally responsive she would open her eyes, make eye contact and smile when we sang "my favorite things." Witnessing and being a part of these touching moments between my grandmother and our family is what initially drew me to being a hospice music therapist.”

“I so value providing a safe and meaningful encounter to grieving people. It’s such a humbling and sacred work knowing that God and I make a difference in individuals’ lives.”
What attracted you to hospice work? “I lost a close friend to cancer when she was 48. Hospice was included in her care and I was so very impressed with the care of the Hospice Chaplain. Although I didn’t seek work as a Chaplain…Chaplaincy found me! I was called within months after my friend’s death, asking if I had ever considered working as a Chaplain. Love those God-touches!”

“People always ask how do you take care of people who are dying! I say I don’t take care of dying people. I take care of the living until the day they die!”
