Helena was born 98 years ago to Dutch immigrants Antonie and Hendrika (Engberts) VanderSalm on a farm near Raymore, Saskatchewan, Canada. Her death on June 26, 2012 was preceded by her parents and siblings Aleida (Abe) Faas and Herman (Hallie) VanderSalm and son-in-law, Dale Osterhouse. At the age of eight she and her family moved to Kalamazoo. She enjoyed the city, school and Bethany Church. She later did babysitting, clerking at the "5 and Dime", and working at Upjohn to help maintain the family during the Great Depression. On August 27, 1934 she married Cornelius (Neil) VanDyke, who died in 1971. They had three children: Marilyn Osterhouse, Kathleen Hubbard and John (Linda) VanDyke. The family enjoyed many family gatherings at their lake home. She and Neil, along with his brothers and spouses traveled to Europe and also visited family while there. In 1974 she married Myron Kollen and welcomed his children Judith (Dave) Portinga, Kathleen (John) Gruizenga, Carol (Jim) Hall, Robert (Carol) Kollen, and Ronald Kollen. The family now includes 13 children and spouses, 28 grandchildren and spouses, 37 great-grandchildren and spouses and three great-great grandchildren. She has been a member of Lakeland Reformed Church (10442 Sprinkle Rd) for many years where services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 30th with Rev. Ed Schmidt officiating.
