Of Kalamazoo Passed away on December 11, 2010 at Bronson Hospital. Walter was born January 20, 1926 in Kendallville, IN a son of Walter Bryan and Theresa Marie Merriman Reed. After High School in Bronson, MI, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard a submarine. When World War II ended, he attended the University of Michigan, graduating from Law School in 1953, when he married Maxine Kennedy in Rodney, Ontario, Canada. They went to California where after taking the Bar Exam, he joined a Law Firm in San Leandro. The next year he decided he didn't like California and came back to Michigan to work in a Law Firm in Big Rapids. Five years later, he moved to Kalamazoo where he became Trust Counsel in the Trust Department of American National Bank, later Old Kent Bank. He retired from there in 1990. Walt was an Indian Guide Leader when his son was in Elementary School. He served terms as an Elder and as a Trustee at the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club. Surviving are his wife Maxine; one son Bryan Stuart Jeannie Reed, 2 daughters, Cam McCaffrey and Patti Joe Amalfitano; seven grandchildren, Misty Reed, Jonathan Jennifer Reed, Ian and Erin McCaffrey, Grace, Kathryn and Angela Amalfitano and one great-granddaughter Jillian Reed; a sister Virginia Frymier; nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Betty Wagner. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, December 19th at the First Presbyterian Church, 321 W. South St. with the Rev. Dr. Seth Weeldreyer and the Rev. Wayne Conner officiating. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Walt's memory be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
