NORLAND, Sandra
of Kalamazoo, Michigan Sandy died Monday, October 1, 2012 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born May 29, 1944 in Frederick, Maryland, the daughter of William Howard Taft and Helen Gertrude Shoemaker Brandenburg. In 1962, Sandy graduated from Frederick High School in Frederick, Maryland. Her education continued and in 1966, she earned a teaching degree in Elementary Education, Social Studies, Music and Art from Moorehead State University. In 1974 and 1984, she earned two additional degrees, an M.A. in Elementary Education and an M.A. in Special Education Emotionally Impaired and Learning Disabilities respectively. On June 5, 1964, she was united in marriage to Jerome Norland. Sandy was a teacher for more than 30 years, teaching elementary, and then secondary Special Education, Emotionally Impaired. She was employed by Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency KRESA and Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home as a special education teacher. Sandy was selected for three foreign teaching exchanges Sweden, Scotland, and Australia by the State of Michigan. From a very young age she was a successful poetess, published in local, national and international publications. Since retiring a few years ago, she and Jerry devoted a lot of time to their church New Hope Church, Richland, volunteering in the community, and traveling all over the world. She loved to take long walks, hike, photograph nature, explore and meet with friends and family. Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Jerome; their two sons, Leif and Christine Norland and Derek and Michelle Norland; and four grandchildren, Hanna, Claire, John and Ethan. Preceding her in death were her parents; and brother, Richard Brandenburg. Funeral services for Sandy will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with Rev. Jan David DeWitt officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park North. Friends may visit the family from 5-8 PM on Friday tomorrow at the funeral home.
